Mangalastak
'Kuryat Sada Mangalam Parinaye Mangalastam'
A mangalastak is a series of four line verses with eight stanzas glorifying Lord Ganesha and asking for the well-being of the couple. They are uttered
during a Gujarati wedding ceremony at the time when the couple's hands are entwined and covered with a shawl. The key phrase in it is "Kuriyat
Sada Mangalam".
The pujaris invoke the blessings of the god praying that the life of the couple may be pure and bloom akin to lowers; that their life may be prosperous; |
| that they may be faithful and trusting of each other; and that the chanting of the 'mangalastak' should fill
their lives with joy and melody. |
 |
Both the bride's family as well as that of the groom's prepares Mangalastaks. Each side sings one stanza alternately.
The names of the bride, groom and their family members are intertwined in such a way that their meanings form a part of the description of nature,
human emotions, blessings etc. Copies of the Mangalastak are distributed among every person present at the wedding and are sung by everyone present
at the venue.
Singing of the Mangalastak is a very distinct feature of the Gujarati Naagar Brahmin community marriages. However, these days even other Gujarati
communities have incorporated this ritual.
